Proper Nutrition for Pets

Proper nutrition plays a huge part in your pet’s general health, just like it does with people. Animals have specific nutritional needs, and sometimes the food you’re feeding your pet falls short in its nutritional profile. Too many times, pet parents think they’re choosing the “right” supplements when shopping online or in a pet store. However, quality varies greatly between companies’ products, and clever marketing schemes convince the consumer to buy, regardless of quality or efficacy.

At Pawsitive Pet Care, we proudly offer the highest quality nutritional products from companies that offer customized support from veterinary professionals, offer approved veterinary continuing education events, and have a proven track record for safety and efficacy.

Billions and Billions

Wait, what is the question? Well, I'll tell you. One time I thought, what the heck, I'm going to try it. I typed into an internet browser, "What is the best dog food?" and it popped up. There were over two billion results. Well, I had to check cats too, so, "What is the best cat food?" Over 1 billion results. Well, then what is a good pet owner supposed to do? You're trying to be responsible. How are you able to make a decision on what is the best thing to feed your little furry friend?

Dr. Bradley Kneeland

What is the answer to that?

The answer, I do know. It's the same person they turn to when that little friend is ill: your veterinarian. What a lot of people don't realize is that a significant part of veterinary medicine deals with pet nutrition. What's the best food? Why is it the best food? Is there a specific food to use in a certain situation? What does that situation look like, and when do you make that change?

Some people are skeptical and think veterinarians just want to sell what they carry in their clinic. What would you say to that?

To that, I'd respond, exactly. We attend seminars, go through continuing education, and review the research on every product we place in our clinic to understand how it benefits the overall health of your pet. We choose what we bring into our clinics based on what we believe will lead to a longer, healthier life for your companion. And frankly, most diets these days are available for online purchase, so you don't even have to go into the clinics if you don't want to.

How does pet nutrition relate to common diseases you see?

Much of the diseases we deal with on a day-to-day basis in veterinary medicine are directly related to pet nutrition: obesity, vomiting, diarrhea, malnutrition, allergies, poor skin, poor coat—all these relate back to how your dog's nutrition impacts their overall well-being. And this is just a start. This doesn't even deal with the basic questions of how much should I feed, how often should I feed, are there such things as special diets for your breed or your size of dog, what is life-stage nutrition, what human food, if any, is compatible with a healthy pet.

Why do you think there's so much confusion among pet owners about nutrition?

No wonder why people are confused. There are literally billions of opinions out there, and somehow you have to choose.

Dr. Fox, a holistic veterinarian, can help design a nutritional protocol for specific health conditions as well as optimize your senior dog or cat’s diet for increased vitality and longevity. Pawsitive Pet Care also features Volhard Dog Nutrition products for those pet parents who want the benefits of a raw food diet without the inconvenience.
