Pet Emergency Services at Pawsitive Pet Care
Today we're going to talk a little bit about emergencies and when you should make that call.
What is an emergency?
Well, simply stating, an emergency is a situation in which, without a relatively rapid response, the patient risks significant injury or even death if we don't get to it in time. There is some variability; some people see emergencies one way, and other people see emergencies another way, so it's not all equal to everybody. But here's a list of some significant things that can happen to your pet that we see often in the clinic that would tell you, yes, this is one we need to talk to you about.
What are some examples of emergencies that require immediate attention?
One would be trauma. The most frequent trauma we see in veterinary medicine is an animal being struck by a vehicle. If that happens, certainly you need to make that call. Some of the other things we look at include if your pet loses consciousness for any reason, if it has the inability to stand, a seizure, or if there's any exposure to toxins, whether that be a human medication, a poison such as rat poison, or chemicals. We need to know about that. If there is blood in the stool or in the vomit, we need to know about that. Another one for cat owners out there is if your cat is straining or has the inability to urinate. Those are very important things.
Now, all of these things, when you put them together, are significant emergency events and they warrant that call without hesitation. There are things out there that might not be that concerning, but that is up to the individual owner. The big take-home message with this whole video is that we're here for you guys, okay? So, if it is important to you and you feel like it's an emergency, you need to reach out and talk to us. Either the technician or the doctor will help you verify where you're at, what you need to do, and what the next step is. So, when in doubt, make that call.
